10.01.2026 VERBIER INTERVIEWS

8th edition of the Verbier Talks on the theme: "Social media & democracy.
Between freedom of expression and algorithmic drift".
Are social media a force for good or evil in democracy?
Social media, presented as new democratic spaces, are now revealing
worrying abuses. By favouring speed and emotion at the
expense of reason, they devalue rational debate in favour of
confrontation.

Abusive language is becoming commonplace, fuelling ever deeper social divisions.
At the same time, the uncontrolled circulation of fake news is undermining trust
in the media and institutions, making it difficult to distinguish between truth and
falsehood.

Without shared trust and dialogue, Western democracies
are weakened and exposed to a dangerous loss of legitimacy.

Programme
5:00 p.m. Welcome
5:30pm - 7pm Debate with 7 speakers and the moderator
7pm - 7:30pm Questions and answers
7:30pm Cocktail reception

The event is open to the public.

Registration required with Eugène Riethmann: eugeneriethmann@gmail.com.
