Saturday 26 October International Rally of the Valais

Since 1960, rallying has been in the DNA of the Valais. Over the years, the Rallye du Vin has become the Rallye International du Valais. Since the late 1970s, the event has been part of the European calendar, including the prestigious European Rally Championship.

The first edition of this event took place in September 1960 under the name "Rallye du Vin". It was part of the 1st Comptoir de Martigny, which has since become the Foire du Valais. As fast as the Octodurian event, the Rallye du Vin quickly grew in size, while remaining true to its name and philosophy: the discovery of the different regions of the canton of Valais, its vineyards and its wines.

From 1976 onwards, the tourist aspect of the event gave way to purely sporting motor racing, and the event soon gained international recognition, including the famous European Rally Championship, which has been held in the Valais every autumn since 1979. With this added visibility, the Rallye du Vin attracted many renowned international drivers, including Jimmy McRae, Per Eklund and Jean Ragnotti. Sweden's Eklund claimed the first foreign victory in 1980. The following year, Jimmy McRae, father of a certain Colin, triumphed on the Valais roads in an Opel Ascona 400.

In the 80s, Harald Demuth (DEU), Robert Droogmans (BEL), Patrick Snijers (BEL) and more recently Lucas Rossetti (ITA), Freddy Loix (BEL), Nicolas Vouilloz (FRA), Giandomenico Basso (ITA) and Esapekka Lappi (FIN), who went on to win the World Rally Championship. Today, the Rallye International du Valais is still one of the most prestigious rounds on the calendar, with its renowned courses.

In 2022, a new 100% volunteer committee took over the organization of the event, with the aim of restoring the rally to its former glory. The Rallye International du Valais remains a myth, with the passes that have made its history, such as the so-called Cols pass, on the territory of the Val de Bagnes commune (Col des Planches, Col du Tronc, Col du Lein).
